JUST HEROES (1989)

John Woo puts it. In an interview with Asian Trash Cinema, Woo recalls the movie's development:

Chang Cheh was getting old, and his health was not very good. So, a bunch of us students (actors and directors) got together and made this film to show our respect and gratitude to him...Our ultimate goal was to make money for him. Just Heroes was an extremely low budget film. Every actor and director worked on the film for free. I directed 80 percent of the film, but I shared screen credit with Wu Ma, Danny Lee and David Chiang (his name now is John Chiang) who also directed parts of the film. The film turned out to be very uneven. We made a lot of compromises because of the budget.

Just Heroes had grossed HK$ 7,913,329 by October 1993 at the Hong Kong box office alone.

It was devised by several disclipses of director Chang Cheh (Woo, Danny Lee, Wu Ma) to help amass a fund upon which the aged Chan could retire. Anyway Chang Cheh refused, and gave the money to the cinema students and still continues working. He is planning to stop working after his 101st. film.

When respected gang boss Tsou is gunned down in an ambush, there are three prospective heirs to his crown: Wai (David Chiang), who has left the triad life to run a fish business; Sou (Danny Lee - cop in The Killer), a quiet and reserved character; and the ambitious Tai, according to his will, Tsou wished for Wai to take his place, but when Wai refuses the duty is passed to the reluctant Sou. Tai's right hand man, the impetuous and babyfaced Jacky (Chow Sing Chi), feels his bos has been cheated, and when Wai uncovers evidence that Sou was the traitor responsible for Tsou's death, Jacky resolves to get his revenge.
