TO HELL WITH THE DEVIL (1981)

A battle between the Good and the Evil. A man is harrassed by the devil in this weird comedy. I believe it is making fun of the William Friedkin's The Exorcist. If you look at the literal translation of the Chinese title, it is not so hard to believe. It also have some influence from some other American film classics like Gone With the Wind and Third Encounters of the Third Kind. Story is told to be loosely based on Dudley Moore and Peter Cook's Faustian set-up Bedazzeld. To Hell with Devil is very strange horror-comedy, many have found it very disappointing, including diehard-Woo-fans. And if the 'bloodshed' is the only thing you love in Woo films this is not for you. In the story a lonely looser Lee Kit (Ricky Hui) is dreaming of beautiful girl but just can't get her. So he is happy to sell his soul to Devil's assistant to jut get the girl. But God wants to save this poor guy; he sends a drunken priest to do the job. John Woo is a Christian and in this film he shows some elements we Christians learn as young children. Heaven and Hell, God and Satan, they all are real stereotypes we've seen many times before. Bad luck seems to follow our unhappy fellow, so he sees an opportynity when Flit the Devil comes to buy his soul. When he finally gets his part of success as popstar he wants to cancel the contract with the Devil. This is where the priest comes to help him. After that there must be sort of fight between good and bad, Devil likes fire of course. But evil Flit is not just one, he is many, since he clones himself. After all as a John Woo film this is really different from any others. Very strange film..

Quotes from the film (Translations, but I haven't seen subtitled version):

'What you need is a canned woman!'.
'What is a soul? It's just a toilet paper.* 'He is a camel, but you don't have to walk a mile for him.'
Is this what the devils do or is it just some bad translation, sort of Hex error?
John Woo worked with Michael Hui, Ricky Huis brother starring in Devil and some other Woo comedies. John Woo was Production manager in some of Michael Huis first directorial films in '70s
